Do I Need a CCW Class in Alabama?

As of January 2023, Alabama is a permitless carry state — no license or training is required to carry a concealed handgun if you're 19+ and can legally own a firearm. So technically, no. You do not need a CCW class to carry in Alabama in 2026.

But here's why you should take one anyway: knowledge, legal protection, and reciprocity. A quality training course teaches you when you can legally use force, how to handle a post-defensive-shooting encounter with law enforcement, and builds the muscle memory that makes you a safer carrier. If you ever travel outside Alabama, most reciprocal states require a permit — and most permits require a course.

Bottom line: Training is not required but is strongly recommended. The Alabama Pistol Permit ($20/year) still requires no training but gives you reciprocity in 33+ states. If you want out-of-state carry, get the permit. If you want to carry safely and confidently, take a course.

Alabama Pistol Permit — No Training Required
